Features

During my time as managing editor of the Long Beach Union Weekly—a now defunct newspaper at California State University Long Beach—I provided a number of well-received features about campus and Long Beach life.

THE GAUNTLET: Editors Vs. Staff

Inspired by a childhood pass time, I organized a competition between the editors and staff of the Union Weekly Newspaper, and then gave a play-by-play recap in the paper. Members of the newspaper competed in several events, ranging from feats of athleticism to tests of intellectual prowess. The competition was then repeated by the following year’s staff, making it something of a Union Weekly tradition.

CONQUERING THE UNKNOWN

I decided to use my position on the paper to highlight the Adult Community Transition program, an organization that helps special needs students on campus transition into the adult world. The feature was commended by the campus special needs and education community.

ETERNAL JAMNATION

In an effort to get an inside look at local musicians and their creative process, I sat in on band practice and attempted to play along on bass or guitar. The feature then explored what I learned trying to jam with a number of different bands and styles from all across the city.
